Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best song they played that year

A hopefully new kind of best of list.

What song did the Dead consistently play the best in a particular year? In other words, if you wanted to find a great version of EYES, I would say throw a dart at any '77 show in which they played it, and you're all set. So here's my own list, and please to list your own, as well as filling in the blanks on years I don't have a strong enough feeling on to say.

1968: ALLIGATOR
1969: CAUTION
1970: ?
1971: HARD TO HANDLE
1972: BIRDSONG
1973: DARK STAR
1974: CHINA>RIDER
1975: HELP>SLIP>FRANKLIN'S TOWER
1976: COSMIC CHARLIE
1977: EYES OF THE WORLD
1978: SCARLET>FIRE
1979: (tie): PASSENGER/SHAKEDOWN STREET
1980: ?
1981: LET IT GROW
1982: IT'S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE
1983: CASSIDY
1984: MORNING DEW
1985: ?
1986: (good luck)
1987: ?
1988: ?
1989: FOOLISH HEART
1990: IKO
1991-1995: (not a clue)

I'll throw so many roads out for 1994. Tough to find consistant greatness in these later years but it seems more often than not SMR delivered big time. Also, dark star for 1991. many DS sightings this year and in unusual places. Not to mention teases and DS jams all around. thanks to Mr hornsby, of course

I find these requests difficult since there were several incarnations of an entity named, "The Grateful Dead." Their bility to keep morphing into each incarnation while retaining the original unique, transcendent seed... I don't know how to phrase it; it's just difficult. Like "Big Boss Man" -- how do I choose a PigPen version or Jerry? I go with Jerry since.....well.....it's Jerry.
Great post; I appreciate the all-encompassing, Mindbender on a lazy Tuesday afternoon in Boston. ==== AshesRising (whoops, is today Tuesday, isn't it?)

My feeble attempt:

1967: Viola Lee Blues (could be '68 though..)
1969: Mountain of the Moon
1970: St. Stephen
1971: Uncle John's Band
1972: New Speedway Boogie
1973: Dark Star
1974: Playin' in the Band
1975: Eyes of the World > Stronger Than Dirt
1976: Mission in the Rain; Slipknot!
1977: Stella Blue; Scarlet > Fire; Comes A Time
1978: Shakedown Street
1979: Franklin's Tower (Cape Cod; sorry, I know it doesn't fit the request but......)
1980: To Lay Me Down (acoustic)
1983: Oct. 17 (Lake Placid)
1984: Morning Dew
1986: Reuben & Cerise; Cats Under the Stars; Run For The Roses; Forever Young; ***Tangled Up In Blue*** (Garcia Band)
1989.: Big Boss Man
1990: Franklin's Tower (Hunter - Boston; "Box of Rain" cd)
1991: Attics of My Life
1994: Standing on the Moon

All great answers to an impossible question.

I was wondering if a "common thread" would emerge, where a majority would agree that some songs were superlative in a given year.

Instead, it was an all over the map result! (which is fine).

i was fairly convinced that everyone would agree 1974 was THE year for China>Rider, with those sick MLB jams thrown in, but hey, that's what makes horse races!

thanks as always to all for your thoughts and musings!

You guys have way too much time on your hands and are consequently a bad influence on me. I should give this more thought. All of these pulled out just off the top of my head.

67 - Viola
68 - Other One
69 - the 11
70 - FOTD, I never much cared for when they slowed it down
71 - NFA>GDTRFB>NFA
72 - Dark Star, Morning Dew
73 - Dark Star, Eyes, China Doll
74 - that's a hard one, I love that year. Possibly China>Rider

75 - Franklins
76 - High Time, Let it Grow
77 - Help/Slip, 1/2 Step, Terrapin
78 - Estimated
80 - Scarlet>Fire
81 - Stranger
87 - Esau (first one that came to my head ), Bucket
88 - Deal
89 - Althea, West LA
90 - Peggy-O, Bird Song, Row Jimmy
91- Candyman , He's Gone

Nice call on the 1970 FOTD!

Cool. Tough too.

67: VL Blues
68: OOne
69: Eleven
70: DS
71: HtHandle

Note: a very personal selection not meant to jibe with objective analysis of the 'best' for each year...sorry!

No sorries necessary--meant to be a personal opinion list indeed.

Subjectivity is the new objectivity. Or something ;-)

Great idea for a thread...I'm thinking of two different ways. The actual best song they played, and also the most consistently then played the tune compared to other years.

1987 - Iko, I love the spring tour versions
1989 - Deal
1990 - Althea - Dang, I am listening to 9/20/90 right now. What an amazing first set, and show http://www.archive.org/details/gd90-09-20.sbd.ashley.14855.sbeok.shnf
1985 - Shakedown, Comes A Time, She Belongs to me,
1984 - Sailor>Saint, Bertha, Loser, Stranger, Let it Grow, Lazy Lightnin'
1983 - St Stephen, Jack Straw, Dew, Deep Elem Blues, (and I like the cassidy call, 10/21/83 comes to mind)
1982 - China>Rider, Crazy Fingers, High Time, On the Road again, To lay me Down
1986 - Satisfaction, Box of Rain (like that Cold rain mention),
1972 - Cumberland Blues,
1974 - FOTD

Outstanding!

Forgot about IKO in '87...my all time favorite is right on the cusp-- 12/31/87 w/the Neville Bros.

Fishead--THANKS for filling in my "lost" years...
Nice call on Sugaree in 1980...forgot about how great they were (i.e., Alaska June--out of sight)

May have to revise my own call on Dew in '84 over "Loser"...many monster versions played that year--my favorite is Ventura, 7/22/84

keep em coming, folks!
